How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal | The Body Clinic Mississauga

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal.
So, you’ve booked your laser hair removal appointment – exciting! To get the most out of each session, proper preparation is key. Prepping your skin and routine before laser hair removal can make a big difference in both your results and your comfort. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what to do (and what not to do) in the weeks and days leading up to your laser sessions. By following these steps, you’ll ensure your treatment goes smoothly and safely.
Laser hair removal at The Body Clinic is a straightforward process, but a little prep work will set you up for success – think of it as prepping a canvas before painting. Let’s dive into the ultimate pre-treatment checklist!
1. Why Proper Preparation Matters
Proper preparation matters because it can directly impact how effective and safe your laser treatment is. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in your hair follicles – we want the laser to hit those follicles at full force and without any interference. If your skin or hair isn’t prepared correctly, the laser may be less effective or your skin could become irritated.
Here are a few reasons prep is important:
• Effectiveness: The laser needs a clear path to the hair root. By prepping (like shaving the area in advance), you ensure the laser’s energy isn’t wasted on hair above the skin and is instead focused below the skin where it’s needed. Proper prep can help you get the most hair reduction out of each session.
• Safety: Some products or recent activities can make your skin more sensitive to laser. For example, if you’ve been in the sun a lot or using strong exfoliants, your skin could be more prone to burning or pigmentation changes from the laser. Preparing correctly (such as avoiding sun and certain skincare ingredients pre-treatment) will minimize the risk of adverse reactions. It also means less discomfort during the session.
• Avoiding Rescheduling: If you show up unprepared (say, with a tan or having waxed recently), our technicians might have to postpone your session for your own safety. Nobody wants that! Sticking to the prep guidelines ensures you can go ahead with your appointment as planned and stay on track with your treatment schedule.
• Optimal Healing: Prepping your skin (and your whole body, really) sets you up for easier recovery. Well-moisturized, unbroken skin, and a body that’s hydrated and healthy will bounce back quickly after treatment. You’ll likely have less post-treatment redness or irritation if you’ve been taking care of the area beforehand.
In short, think of preparation as part of the treatment itself. It’s the foundation that helps your laser sessions deliver great results with minimal downsides. At The Body Clinic, we provide each client with detailed pre-care and aftercare instructions because we truly want you to have the best experience possible. Follow the guidelines below, and you’ll be golden!
2. What to Do Before Laser Hair Removal
To ensure a smooth treatment, make sure you check these to-dos off your list before you come in for your laser hair removal session:
• Shave the Area 24 Hours Before: We ask that you shave the treatment area about a day (no more than 24 hours) before your appointment. This is crucial. Shaving leaves a tiny bit of hair just under the skin for the laser to target, but removes the excess hair above the skin. If the hair on the surface is too long, the laser could singe it and potentially burn your skin or simply waste energy on hair that’s going to be removed anyway. By shaving the day prior (or the morning of, if you have to, but not too far in advance), you ensure the area is nice and smooth. Use a clean, new razor and shaving cream to avoid irritation. Tip: shave in the direction of hair growth to prevent razor bumps. (Do not wax or pluck – more on that in the “what NOT to do” section.)
• Keep Skin Clean and Product-Free: On the day of your treatment, the area to be lasered should be clean, dry, and free of any cosmetics. That means no lotions, oils, deodorants, perfumes, or makeup on the skin. These products could create a barrier or react with the laser light. Before your session, simply cleanse the area with mild soap and water, and skip any skincare products afterward. If you’re coming straight from work and have something on (like deodorant or makeup on an area we’re treating), don’t worry – we’ll cleanse it off for you before starting.
• Inform Your Technician About Medications: This is important for your safety. Certain medications can make your skin more sensitive to laser light. For example, Accutane (an acne medication) or other retinoids can thin the skin and make laser treatment riskier – you typically need to be off Accutane for at least 6 months to a year before doing laser . Some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs can also cause photosensitivity (meaning you could burn more easily). Even herbal supplements can sometimes affect things. So, always let us know about any prescription meds, over-the-counter meds, or supplements you’re taking. In most cases, we can proceed, but we might adjust settings or advise a waiting period after you finish a medication. Your honesty ensures we give you the correct guidance.
• Stay Hydrated and Healthy: This one is simple but effective – drink plenty of water and take care of your skin health in the lead-up to your session. Hydrated skin responds better and heals faster. Also, if you can, try to avoid things that might inflame your skin pre-treatment (like excessive alcohol which can dry you out, or new harsh skincare routines). Arrive with your skin in its normal, healthy state.
• Plan Your Appointment Timing Thoughtfully: If possible, don’t schedule your laser session for a day when you have something strenuous immediately after. While there’s no downtime, your skin might be a bit sensitive or red for a short time. It’s wise to give yourself a little buffer. Also, if you’re doing areas like underarms or bikini, consider wearing loose, comfortable clothes to your appointment (more on that in the Day-Of section) to avoid irritation afterward.
By doing these few things – shaving, keeping skin product-free, communicating about meds, and being generally skin-conscious – you set the stage for a successful laser treatment. Our team at The Body Clinic will do the rest! We’ll double-check all these factors with you when you come in, just to be sure nothing was missed. We’re a team in this process, and your job is to prep; our job is to perform the treatment with care and expertise. Together, we’ve got this.
3. What NOT to Do Before Laser Hair Removal
Just as important as the do’s are the don’ts. Avoiding certain things in the weeks and days leading up to laser hair removal will help protect your skin and make the treatment effective. Here’s what you should NOT do before your laser sessions:
• No Waxing, Tweezing, or Sugaring (for 4-6 Weeks Prior): In fact, no plucking or any method that removes hair by the root. The laser needs the hair’s root (follicle) to be present to work. Waxing or tweezing yanks out the entire hair follicle. If there’s no dark root in the follicle, the laser has nothing to target, and the treatment won’t work. You should discontinue waxing or plucking at least one month (preferably six weeks) before your first laser session, and don’t do it at all in between sessions. Shaving is the only hair removal method you should use once you’re gearing up for laser. (Threading the surface hairs is also not recommended on the treatment area.) It can be a little inconvenient to let hair grow out for a bit before you start laser, but remember you’ll be shaving it once you start treatment, and ultimately you won’t have to deal with it ever again!
• No Sun Exposure or Tanning (for ~2 Weeks Prior): Avoid sunbathing, tanning beds, and even self-tanning lotions on the areas you plan to treat, for a good two weeks (if not longer) before your appointment . Laser hair removal works best on untanned skin. If your skin is tanned, it has more pigment (melanin) active, which can attract the laser and increase the risk of burns or pigment changes. We want a nice contrast between your skin tone and hair color for safety and efficacy. If you do get some sun unintentionally, let us know – we may need to adjust settings or wait longer. Also, always use an SPF 30+ on any area you’re planning to laser (and really, just as a rule, use sunscreen daily!). Protecting your skin from the sun not only avoids rescheduling your laser, but it’s also great for your skin health in general.
• Stop Using Retinols, AHAs/BHAs, or Other Harsh Exfoliants (2 Weeks Prior): If you use strong skincare products on the area to be treated (like retinol or Retin-A, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, etc.), pause them about 10-14 days before your laser session. These products increase cell turnover and can make skin more fragile or sensitive. We want your skin in a normal, robust state for laser. For instance, if you’re getting facial laser hair removal and you’re on a retinoid for acne, you’ll need to stop it for the recommended time (usually 2 weeks) before and after treatment in that area. The same goes for things like chemical peels or microdermabrasion – don’t do any major exfoliating treatments for a couple of weeks before laser on that area. Gentle exfoliation is fine, but nothing intense that could leave the skin freshly irritated.
• No Botox/Fillers in the Area (2 Weeks Prior): This mainly applies if you’re doing facial laser (like upper lip, chin, cheeks). If you’ve had any Botox or dermal filler injections in the area to be lasered, you should wait at least 14 days before laser treatment on that area. This is to ensure everything has settled and to avoid any unintended interactions or inflammation. For example, if you had Botox on your upper lip for a gummy smile, we’d hold off lasering the upper lip for the precautionary period. Always mention any recent cosmetic injections to your technician.
• Don’t Schedule During Your Menstrual Cycle (for Bikini Laser): This isn’t a strict medical no-no, but a tip: if you’re getting a Brazilian or bikini laser, you might want to avoid scheduling sessions during your period. The area can be more sensitive around that time, and you’ll also need to manage hygiene (we can work around a tampon, but many clients prefer to come when it’s not an issue). Just something to keep in mind for your own comfort.
• Avoid Illness or Skin Infections: If you have any active infection on the skin (like a rash, fungal infection, active cold sore in the area, etc.), or if you’re feeling unwell (feverish, etc.), it’s better to reschedule. Do not go into a laser session with compromised skin or health. It’s rare, but treating over a skin infection could potentially spread it or worsen it. Also, you generally just want to be feeling your best.
By avoiding these things – sun, plucking, certain skincare products, etc. – you’re protecting your skin and ensuring the laser can do its job properly. It might take a bit of willpower (resisting that wax or keeping out of the sun), but it will pay off with better results. If you’re ever unsure about whether something is okay or not before your session, just call us at The Body Clinic and ask! We’d rather you check if you’re uncertain. We can advise you on any grey areas.
4. Detailed Preparation Timeline
To make it super clear, here’s a timeline you can follow as you count down to your laser appointment:
• 6 Weeks Before Your First Session: Discontinue waxing, sugaring, tweezing, or epilating the area. From now on, only remove hair by shaving (or trimming). This ensures there’s a root for the laser to target when you start your sessions. If you recently waxed, wait about 4-6 weeks before starting laser to let those roots grow back in. Tip: It’s okay to shave during this waiting period if you need to remove hair – in fact, please do, rather than waxing again.
• 2 Weeks Before: Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning on the area. If you’re a sun lover, now’s the time to cover up or lather on that sunscreen. Also, stop using any self-tanner lotions or sprays on the area. We want your natural skin tone come appointment time. Around the 10-14 day mark prior, also stop any retinoids or strong acids on the area as mentioned. If you’ve had a recent chemical peel or laser resurfacing on that area, wait until at least 2 weeks (or as advised by your provider) before doing laser hair removal. Basically, two weeks out, you want to keep the skin as untouched and calm as possible – no big treatments or irritants.
• 3 Days Before: If you are using any prescription topical creams on the area (for example, a doctor-prescribed acne cream, or perhaps a bleaching cream for hyperpigmentation), it’s wise to pause these a few days before your session. Some prescriptions (even if not “acid” or “retinol”) can contain strong ingredients that irritate when combined with laser. Also, if you’ve been on antibiotics orally for an infection, try to finish them a few days before your session; some antibiotics can make you sun-sensitive, which translates to laser-sensitive. Always consult your physician if unsure. Essentially, by 3 days out, you should have eliminated anything on the skin that could cause sensitivity.
• 1 Day Before: Shave the area you plan to have treated, ideally 24 hours prior. As mentioned, shaving ensures the laser can penetrate to the follicle. A little bit of stubble (like the shadow under the skin) is fine – that’s actually good – but there should be no long hairs above skin surface. Use a gentle razor and shaving cream. Take your time to avoid nicks or cuts. If you do accidentally nick yourself, let us know – we can work around small cuts or delay until it’s healed. For areas that are hard to shave yourself (like your back), you might need to ask for help or carefully use a body groomer. Alternatively, some clients choose to come in unshaven and request the technician to shave for them – we can do that, but it’s something to arrange in advance and may incur a small fee. It’s best if you can arrive pre-shaven to maximize your appointment time for laser rather than shaving. After shaving, do not apply lotions or deodorant, etc., to that area.
By following this timeline, you’ll arrive at your appointment with your skin in perfect shape for laser: pale (not tanned), hair present in follicle (but shaved at surface), skin clear of any sensitizing products, and you feeling prepped! It may seem like a lot to remember, but after your first session or two, it’ll become second nature as part of your routine. We’ll also remind you of these guidelines when you book and in reminder communications.
Lastly, mental prep: feel free to compile any questions or concerns you have and bring them with you. We are here to answer and reassure you. Coming in with a good understanding (like reading this blog – kudos to you!) will make you an empowered patient and likely make the experience even better.
5. What to Expect on the Day of Treatment
The big day is here! Knowing what to expect can help ease any nerves and ensure you’re ready for your laser hair removal appointment. Here’s a quick rundown of how to prepare on the actual day and what will happen during your session:
• Dress Comfortably: Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes that will not rub on the treated area after the session. For example, if you’re getting your bikini or legs done, opt for a loose skirt or soft track pants instead of tight jeans or leggings. If you’re treating underarms, wear a sleeveless or a top with loose arm holes. The treated area might be a bit sensitive or have some post-treatment gel on it, so you don’t want rough or tight fabrics causing irritation. Also, wear something that’s easy to take off if needed; you may be given a gown or asked to expose the area (e.g., for back or chest treatments).
• Arrive With Clean Skin: As noted, no creams, deodorant, makeup, etc., on the area. If you’re coming from work or elsewhere and have products on, we can provide wipes to remove them before treatment. It’s best not to apply anything after your shower if you’re showering that day. Also, ensure the area is dry (no overly moisturized skin).
• During the Treatment – Step by Step: We’ll start by having you get comfy in the treatment room. The laser technician will review your prep, ask if there have been any changes (new meds, sun exposure, etc.). Then, they’ll examine and clean the area to make sure it’s ready. If there are any stray hairs that were missed while shaving, we might quickly shave them. Next, we’ll mark or section the area (for example, draw grids on large areas like legs with a white pencil, to ensure full coverage).
You’ll be given protective eyewear to put on (looks like little goggles). The technician will also wear safety glasses. This is because the laser is very bright and we must protect our eyes. Once everything is set, the technician will adjust the laser machine settings tailored to your skin tone and hair thickness.
For many lasers (like our Soprano ICE), a cooling gel is applied to the skin before starting. This gel helps the handpiece glide and also further protects the skin. It might feel a bit cold and goopy – but it’s all part of the process!
Now the laser zapping begins: the technician will either stamp the laser in sections (for something like LightSheer) or move it in motions (for Soprano ICE) across the area. You will feel the sensation we described earlier – possibly a warm tingling or quick snapping feeling. It should NOT be unbearably painful. If you feel any strong pain or discomfort, speak up – we can pause, add more cooling, or adjust settings. But most people handle it just fine. Smaller areas are over in minutes (an upper lip takes maybe 1 minute of lasering). Bigger areas like full legs might take 20-30 minutes or so. We’ll let you know estimated timing.
You might notice a slight smell of burnt hair – that’s totally normal and actually a good sign the hair is being
affected. The technician might wipe away any hair debris as they go.
Once the area is fully treated, we’ll clean off any gel and apply a soothing aftercare product (like aloe vera or a post-laser cream) to calm the skin. The treated follicles might look like tiny pink or red bumps, and your skin might be a tad pinkish – this is a normal reaction and usually fades within a couple of hours.
• After the Treatment: We’ll go over aftercare instructions (which generally include avoiding heat, sun, and certain products for 24-48 hours). You can go about your day – there’s no real downtime. If we treated an area that’s usually under clothing, keep it in loose clothes for the rest of the day. If it’s your face, you can reapply mineral makeup or sunscreen after if you need to, but we often suggest just letting it breathe that day if possible.
Emotionally, expect to feel excited that you’ve started the process! Many people also feel relieved finding it wasn’t bad at all pain-wise. You might even see a tiny bit of hair singeing or shedding right away, but most of the shedding of dead hairs will happen gradually over the next 1-2 weeks (hairs will work out of the follicles and fall out – you’ll notice what looks like stubble pushing out, but it’s actually the treated hairs dropping out from the root).
That’s the day-of in a nutshell: come in prepared, relax during the quick procedure, and walk out one step closer to hair-free skin! If you have any aftercare questions or concerns in the days following, we’re just a phone call away. But chances are, you’ll find it pretty easy and be looking forward to your next session.
